Experience the National Butterfly Center

The National Butterfly Center is a project of the North American Butterfly Association dedicated to connecting people with butterflies, native plants, and the habitats that sustain them.

Located in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of South Texas, the Center encompasses 100 acres of gardens and natural habitat where butterflies, birds, native plants, and other wildlife can be experienced in both cultivated and wild settings.

Explore our gardens and trails, visit the Native Plant Nursery, watch for wildlife, and discover why the Rio Grande Valley is such an extraordinary place for nature.

You Never Know What You'll See

Nearly 150 species of North American butterflies can be seen only in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas, or by traveling to Mexico. More than 300 butterfly species may be found in the Valley, and more than 240 species have been recorded at the National Butterfly Center, including rarities and U.S. records.

In fact, nearly 40% of the 700+ butterfly species found in the United States can be seen in this three-county area at the southernmost tip of Texas.

Because our butterflies and other wildlife are wild and free-flying, every visit is different. Seasons, rainfall, temperature, and other natural conditions influence what may be active on any given day.

Whether you come for butterflies, birds, native plants, photography, or simply a day outdoors, there is always something to discover.

Come explore the National Butterfly Center and experience the wild side of South Texas.
