Intensive Native Plant Specialist Internship

Winter-Intensive Native Plant Specialist Internship Position DescriptionPosition Summary: This position works under supervision from the Director of Operations and Nursery Specialist. We are seeking an inquisitive gardener, interested in learning more about how to identify and propagate native plants of the Rio Grande Valley, with a focus on prime nectar and host plants for butterflies. He/she will work mostly outdoors, collecting and cleaning seed, taking cuttings and growing plants for the gardens and for sale to the public. Position involves working 40 hours per week, for four weeks, during the university’s winter break. Essential duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Native plant propagation, including collecting and cleaning seeds, germinating, transplanting and salvaging plants.
  • Following appropriate work/production plans to meet daily and weekly goals for the center, our partners, contracts and customers.
  • Seeking out and harvesting native plants needed for the gardens and nursery to increase our inventory of native plants species.
  • Assisting volunteers in their training and sharing feedback for continuous improvement.
  • Tracking and maintaining inventory of plants and supplies and relaying information in a timely manner to the Nursery Specialist for orders/reorders, as necessary, at the discretion of the Executive Director.
  • Assisting park visitors with questions regarding native plant species to support our mission of environmental and environmental stewardship.
  • Performs other assigned duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications: Requires a high school diploma or equivalent, college coursework and an interest in Botany.  Also requires the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • Must interact well with park visitors and welcome them to the nursery and gardens with courtesy and professionalism.
  • Must demonstrate an appropriate level of analytical ability and problem-solving skills in daily work situations and be able to follow a production plan.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with coworkers, visitors and volunteers.
  • Must follow instructions for the safe handling of plant and production materials, tools, hormones, etc. to ensure personal safety and that of visitors and wildlife.
  • Must demonstrate physical dexterity in handling plants, tools, equipment and other related accessories.
  • Must have reliable personal transportation.
  • Must maintain a record of dependable punctuality and attendance.

Working Conditions: Work is performed mainly outdoors subject to the weather and during daylight hours. Office workspace is climate controlled. Physical Demands: Requires the ability to stand up to 70% of the time; walk up to 20% of the time; and sit up to 10% of the time. Requires the ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds and push a wheelbarrow. Also requires the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, handle, speak, hear and see in color vision. Groundskeeper & Educator

Position Summary: A groundskeeper is responsible for the maintenance of the gardens and trails and performs a variety of tasks related to gardening and landscaping. The groundskeeper will also play a role in the educational programs, field trips, presentations and community events, both at the NBC and off-premises. Handles duties that arise unexpectedly through the day in addition to regular, routine duties such as greeting and assisting visitors, members and volunteers. Walks the grounds daily to learn it well and be able to identify hazards and opportunities. Learns the native plants and the butterflies of the region to contribute to visitors’ overall experiences. Essential duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Weeds, waters and maintains plant and beds and reports issues to Director of Operations, in a timely manner.
  • Keeps groundskeeper’s work space, outside restrooms, palapas and other areas cleaned, stocked and properly maintained, on a daily basis.
  • Feeds butterflies, birds and other wildlife, daily, according to prescribed practices, and our mission and purpose.
  • Performs duties in support of native plant propagation and Nursery production.
  • Participates in environmental education programs.
  • Secures the grounds and assets at the end of the workday by clearing the gardens and trails of visitors and locking up.

Minimum Qualifications: Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 1 year related work experience. Prefer some knowledge of plants, gardening, plumbing, carpentry and electrical. Ability to communicate in English and/or Spanish. Also requires the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Interacts with park visitors with the utmost respect and
